Yes. Forgiveness is not a transaction. It is not a single decision made on one remarkable afternoon. It is a loosening. A gradual release of the grip that has been holding onto something longer than it was needed. The memory does not disappear. The weight does.

What lingers with me is the distinction between the scar and the wound. The scar is not a failure. It is the evidence that healing has occurred. The wound is the open place that still asks for attention. Forgiveness does not erase the scar. It stops mistaking it for an open wound.

The scar is not the problem. The belief that it is still bleeding is the problem.

Forgiveness has always felt a little different to me. I don't forgive because the other person has earned it. I forgive because I don't want anger and bitterness taking up residence in my own heart. That's a gift I give myself.

At the same time, forgiveness has never required me to forget. Wisdom remembers what happened so that compassion doesn't become permission for it to happen again. For me, forgiveness opens my hand, but discernment keeps my eyes open.

Thank you for another thoughtful piece. It gave me a lot to reflect on.
